I disagree, but appreciate your thoughts.

If we want more people, we need to make more opportunities. Not everyone has access to university or is introduced to computing as a child. Different people have different paths, and I want to enable people from diverse backgrounds to enter the industry.

I disagree that it needs to be your "true calling" to be successful. Plenty of people are great programmers without that.

People who have families, or who do not have the finances to afford university might not otherwise benefit from this amazing industry. It's our responsibility having been fortunate enough to enter, to extend a hand back and help others get in.

Arguably the same is true of surgeons too, you want the end goal to be high, but the barrier to entry shouldn't be. it's also important to remember we are not surgeons.

The developers who deal with life and death scenarios should certainly be high quality, but you don't need 12 years of study to build CRUD apps.
